I had been putting off updating my Samsung phone for over a year ever since I saw how ugly the update looked on one of my friend's phone. I finally gave in and updated it- its worse than i expected.

Truly, I cannot understate how much I hate this.
- Everything has rounded corners which cannot be changed. The battery icon, widgets, app icons etc. are all ovals.
-The widgets' backgrounds are way too opaque even when its set at most transparent, and they always seem to blur whatever is behind them.
- The apps screen appears in a white haze now. It is really annoying. The search bar is at the bottom and cannot be moved up. It's all white and hurts to look at.
- Speaking of things hurting to look at, what even is the notification panel doing? Why is the together setting the only thing we can change about it? It's so uncustomizable it feels like a joke. 

I have been looking through various forums for a while now, and it seems that a large proportion of users want the previous UI design available. The current one looks off. Everything is white and round. It's actually ugly.

Hi , read your report, I was pretty much the same last year when the update came in .
However, you can edit almost everything the way you prefer, my battery icon is back to showing bars not a pill . You can do anything in goodlock, change icons , sizes , opacity, clocks , the whole lot , even make wallpaper you like .
You can't go backwards, embrace the new and try something different. I hope you find this useful,

As GeoffAnderson has said you can change everything you don't like by installing goodlock and the corresponding side loading apps that came with it instead of worrying about the way it looks except it and change the way it looks and I guarantee the results will not disappoint 😊

I have a samsung galaxy s22 ultra using 8.0 software I'm still waiting for update 8.5 I'm told my phone should get this update how long will it be before I receive the update

I don't think you're getting it.
I got it on a S23 ultra I have but it's the last OneUI update its getting.Obviously its a year newer than yours so I think 8.0 is/was the last OneUI update for S22.
